There’s Oil in the Water: Oh My!

Posted: under Musings of My Restless Mind, Uncategorized.

When President Obama was elected we were given a chance to change the story of our culture in an incredible way. We were invited to take back the power of community and the strength of the individual in order to change the direction of our future. We still have that opportunity but it is eroding quickly. Why? I believe we have fallen back on the old idea that somebody else is supposed to be responsible for us and our government should be taking care of our basic needs. Now we face the crisis of one of the greatest, man made, environmental disasters in human history. What are we doing? As near as I can tell we are sitting around wringing our hands and donating money to save the poor oil soaked birdies. Forgive my directness here but where is the demand for heads on pikes? Where is the overwhelming cry for those responsible to be held accountable? This is not about money. As one gulf fisherman said: ” you could give me a million dollars tomorrow and my life is still ruined.” This is about an oil company and all of its affiliates literally destroying the planet with impunity. ” Oh we are so sorry this happened, but we don’t really know who’s responsible.” B*** S***.

Stop waiting for the Government to do something. Do something yourself. Talk to your neighbors and boycott BP products, ride public transportation, walk, or ride your bike. Write to your government representatives and demand they find some courage to stand up for you and the environment. Demand fair and honest reporting from the media. And by all that is good and holy stop believing the story that government and big business has your best interest in mind.

I have been working with story and its power to promote postive change for a long time.

.

As a principal in a public school that had a less than savory reputation I found that by helping the staff, students, families, and commmunity change the stories they told we were able to become a model of positive educational reform. The school became a great place for kids to learn, families to be involved in the education of their children, and a great place to work.

Check out the Specialty workshops page and learn a bit about the process that evolved from that work.

“In the century now dawning, spirituality, visionary consciousness, and the ability to build and mend human relationships will be more important for the fate and safety of this nation (and our universe) than our capacity to forcefully subdue an enemy.  Creating the world we want is a much more subtle but more powerful mode of operation than destroying the one we don’t want.”
